Traffic at Almanza2, Las Pinas City |
Las Pinas, is a small city of 12.62 sq.mi., south of Manila. It has an estimated population of half a million, per the National Census of 2010. The residents living in the area are called Las Pinero.
With the small area, it would be surprising to see many big commercial centers along Real Street up to the City of Muntinlupa. There is the SM Southmall, three SM Centers, a Robinson's Mall, Puregold, and the humongous Alabang Town Center and Filinvest Mall in the nearby Muntinlupa City.
Traffic along Almanza 2, Las Pinas City |
With a small road network, it is not surprising to experience horrible traffic, from Alabang to Zapote. At Almanza 2, which is near the SM Southmall, the traffic congestion can be so bad that it is faster to walk going to the mall than ride a jeepney.
I often wonder why there is no master plan for the city that would have avoided the chaos. The used of a master plan have been implemented in the nearby Ayala-Alabang Commercial/Residential area with some degree of success.
Bus cutting in resulting to traffic congestion |
There should have been foresight in the placement of commercial centers along residential areas. The SM Southmall has no side street where jeepneys can pick their passenger or get them off. A bus station was placed along the road, that incoming buses cut the traffic from one end to the other end, just so they can enter the bus station.
These pictures were taken around lunch time, last Friday. Since it was a payday (May 15) the traffic was hard to contain from early morning till late at night. This is a horrible situation where, we hope, the bright boys of the City Hall can find a solution real fast.
